Human Rights Day is being observed worldwide today, with Nepal joining the international community through a series of events, awareness activities, and advocacy programs organized nationwide. The Day commemorates the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), a historic milestone endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly on December 10, 1948.

The UDHR is widely regarded as the foundation of modern human rights principles. According to the United Nations, it “enshrines the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being – regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.” With 577 translations, from Abkhaz to Zulu, it remains the most translated document in the world, reflecting its universal relevance and accessibility.

This year, Human Rights Day is being celebrated under the theme “Human Rights, Our Everyday Essentials,” emphasizing the importance of protecting fundamental rights in daily life and fostering inclusive, just, and equitable societies. On the occasion, top officials of Nepal, President Ramchandra Paudel, Vice President Ramsahay Prasad Yadav, and Prime Minister Sushila Karki, issued special messages. Political leaders from various parties also conveyed their commitments.

In their messages, the leaders highlighted Nepal’s constitutional guarantees, which closely align with the UDHR, reaffirming the nation’s commitment to safeguarding and promoting human rights. They stressed that the Constitution of Nepal upholds a wide range of fundamental rights, ensuring dignity, equality, and freedom for all citizens. The leaders reiterated Nepal’s ongoing commitment to strengthening human rights protection mechanisms and fostering a culture of respect, inclusivity, and justice across the country.
