Govt to Launch Second National Economic Census 2082 for Economic Reform

The Second National Economic Census 2082 is scheduled to officially commence data collection on Baisakh 2, 2083 and ends on Ashadha 7th2083  marking a critical milestone in Nepal's data driven governance. Following the announcement by Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle, the National Statistics Office (NSO) will deploy 4,433 enumerators and supervisors across 84 census offices nationwide. This massive undertaking aims to map the country's economic landscape over a two month field period ending in late June. Minister Wagle has underscored that the participation of both registered and unregistered businesses is vital, as the resulting data will serve as the primary foundation for "Second Generation Economic Reforms" and the eventual re-basing of the country’s GDP.

The census will cover 18 major economic sectors, ranging from large scale manufacturing and hydropower to small scale trade and non governmental organizations. Beyond just counting establishments, the 2082 census is designed to capture the evolution of Nepal's economy since the first census in 2018, specifically focusing on employment trends, the scale of digital commerce, and the resilience of industries following recent global and local economic shifts. Minister Wagle also state that this economic census will help to formulates the effective budget and also support privatization and Industrialization for the Nepal's new economy.
