Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Bikram Timilsina, has clarified that the government has no intention of curtailing press freedom and remains fully committed to protecting constitutional rights related to the media sector.

Responding to questions raised by lawmakers during today’s meeting of the House of Representatives, Minister Timilsina said the Constitution has guaranteed press freedom and no one has the authority to suppress it. However, he stressed that press freedom should be exercised responsibly while maintaining professional dignity and ethical boundaries.

“The government cannot act arbitrarily if the press itself maintains its dignity and boundaries,” the minister said, urging journalists and media institutions to work confidently while upholding professional standards and responsibilities. Minister Timilsina further stated that the government is committed to strengthening institutions such as Press Council Nepal and the Central Board of Film Censor to make them more capable and effective.
