Government Launches Online Download Service for E-National ID
The Department of National ID and Civil Registration has launched a new service allowing citizens to download their e-National ID card online.
The department announced on Thursday that the service has started on a trial basis through its Citizen Portal, as part of the government's 100 day governance reform agenda aimed at making public services easier for citizens.
Starting June 18, 2026, citizens can download a "provisional national identity card" from the portal. The downloaded card includes a photo, a password, and a QR code that can be used to verify the holder's details online.
Citizens who already have a national identity number can get their e-ID by entering their name (in Nepali or English), date of birth, and the date their citizenship certificate was issued.
The department has asked citizens to keep their downloaded ID cards secure. It has also asked government offices and service providers to verify identity by scanning the QR code and matching it against the details a citizen presents, rather than relying only on a printed slip as before.
A user guide for the new service is available on the Citizen Portal and the department's website.
