Nepal's Finance Minister, Dr. Swarnim Wagle, is scheduled to hold a press conference at 3:00 PM today to clarify and provide detailed insights into the newly presented budget for the fiscal year 2083/84. According to his secretariat, the briefing will take place at the Suvarnal Hall inside the Ministry of Finance. This conference comes immediately after the budget's presentation in parliament, aiming to address public queries, outline execution strategies, and elaborate on the government's economic vision for the upcoming year.
The press meet is highly anticipated as the public and economic experts seek clarity on several fiscal policies, most notably the brewing controversy and widespread criticism surrounding the government's tax policy on electricity. Critics and consumer rights groups have raised serious concerns over recent tax adjustments related to electric vehicles (EVs) and domestic electricity consumption, arguing that higher duties contradict the state's public commitment to promoting clean energy. Opponents argue that imposing heavy taxes on green energy alternatives burdens the public, slows down the adoption of eco-friendly technology, and dampens the domestic consumption of surplus electricity generated by the country’s hydropower sectors. "Government wants public to reduce use of petroleum products but imposed tax on the electricity consumption" said by one of the opposing parliament members. Dr. Wagle is expected to directly address these criticisms and defend the rationale behind the tax structures during this afternoon's session.
