With only eight days remaining for the House of Representatives (HoR) election scheduled for March 5, the Election Commission has issued a strong reminder to political parties, candidates, and the public not to obstruct election campaigning or voting rights.

The House of Representatives election is approaching its final phase, and the Commission has stressed that any attempt to bar candidates or political parties from conducting election publicity will result in strict legal action. According to the EC, individuals found guilty of such obstruction may face a fine of up to Rs 200,000, imprisonment for up to three years, or both, as per federal law.

In a statement, the Commission clarified that no one is allowed to prevent political parties or candidates from carrying out campaign-related activities, nor can citizens be restricted from exercising their right to vote. “Deprivation of voting rights is a punishable offense,” the EC reiterated.

The Commission has been actively monitoring election-related activities across the country through various channels and media. It has also received complaints alleging that some candidates and parties were hindered by rival groups from conducting campaign programmes. Reports of such violations published in different media outlets have drawn serious concern from the election body.

The EC noted that the election code of conduct is already in force and that all stakeholders, including candidates, political parties, and their sister organizations, have been clearly informed about permissible activities during the election period. As per the code, election programmes, rallies, gatherings, and meetings must not be disrupted under any circumstances.

Reaffirming its commitment to ensuring a free and fair electoral environment, the Commission has urged all sides to strictly comply with the code of conduct and help maintain a peaceful democratic process.
