Dol Prasad (DP) Aryal, Vice Chairman of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), has been elected unopposed as the new Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Aryal emerged as the sole candidate after the Parliament Secretariat opened nominations and no other party fielded a competing candidate. RSP Chairperson Rabi Lamichhane proposed his candidacy, which was seconded by lawmakers Swarnim Wagle, Sobita Gautam, and Sunil Lamsal.

Aryal, 51, entered parliamentary politics through the proportional representation system in the 2022 elections and won the Kathmandu-9 constituency seat in the March 5 polls. He played a key role in leading the RSP during RSP chief Lamichhane's time in judicial custody, steering the party both politically and in Parliament.

After filing his nomination, Aryal pledged to carry out his constitutional responsibilities in accordance with the Constitution, law, and due process. Aryal is set to take the oath of office as Speaker from the President today.
