Commemorative coins to be issued

A board meeting of Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) on Monday decided to issue a commemorative Rs2,000 silver coin and a Rs100 cupronickel coin to celebrate the promulgation of Nepal’s new constitution. NRB will mint 5,000 pieces of the silver coins and 20,000 pieces of the cupronickel coins. According to central bank spokesperson Trilochan Pangeni, the coins are not legal tender, but people can buy them for collection purposes. He said that the minting department of NRB would start producing the coins soon after the Cabinet gives the go-ahead. NRB has been minting commemorative coins on special occasions. The Constituent Assembly promulgated the new constitution on Sunday, setting off jubilation across the country and protests in a few Tarai districts.
