In a dramatic escalation of political accountability, former Prime Minister and CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli was arrested from his residence in Gundu, Bhaktapur, in the early hours of Saturday, March 28, 2026.

The arrest was executed by teams from the Bhaktapur District Police Range and the Valley Police Office around 4:40 AM, following an urgent warrant related to "crimes against life." This move comes just one day after the swearing-in of the new government led by Prime Minister Balendra (Balen) Shah, whose cabinet immediately moved to implement the findings of the Karki Commission.

The commission’s report held Oli and other high-ranking officials, including former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak (who was also detained today), responsible for "criminal negligence" during the suppression of the September 2025 "Gen Z" protests, which resulted in at least 77 deaths. Security has been significantly tightened across the Kathmandu Valley as the new administration signals a rigorous stance on investigating the violence of the previous year.
