Bay of Bengal Low-Pressure System May Bring Heavy Rainfall to Nepal from Sept 24–28

A low-pressure system developing over the Bay of Bengal could increase rainfall activity across Nepal from September 24 to 28 (8–12 Ashwin), with some meteorologists warning of the possibility of very heavy rainfall in certain areas.

Meteorologist Dr. Binod Pokharel said several forecast models indicate widespread rainfall during the period, with some models projecting more than 400 mm of rain in certain locations. However, he stressed that the rainfall would not be uniform across the country.

Meteorologist Ujjwal Upadhyaya has also urged close monitoring, identifying September 26 (10 Ashwin) as a potentially higher-risk day while cautioning that forecasts could still change. The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology is closely monitoring the system and said its actual impact on Nepal will become clearer in the coming days.

Meteorologists have urged the public not to panic but to remain alert, particularly regarding travel, flooding, landslides and agricultural losses to ready-to-harvest paddy crops.

Meanwhile, the system could develop further over the Bay of Bengal and potentially strengthen into a depression or deep depression. If it develops into a cyclone, it will reportedly be named ‘Arnab’, a name contributed by Bangladesh.
