Bangladesh Remittances Surge 22.5% to Nearly $3 Billion in August

Millions of Bangladeshis living and working overseas sent nearly $6 billion in remittances to the country during July and August, providing a strong boost to its foreign exchange earnings.

According to official data, Bangladesh received $2.967 billion in remittances in August, representing a 22.5 percent increase year-on-year, Arief Hossain Khan, spokesperson and executive director of the Bangladesh Bank (BB), told Xinhua on Sunday.

Bangladesh also recorded strong remittance inflows in July, when overseas Bangladeshis sent approximately $2.859 billion home.

Combined, remittance inflows during the first two months of the current fiscal year reached nearly $5.83 billion, highlighting the continued importance of migrant workers' earnings to the country's external sector.

Bangladesh's remittance earnings reached an all-time high of more than $35 billion during the last fiscal year, 2025/26, which ended in June, according to Bangladesh Bank data.

Remittances remain one of Bangladesh's major sources of foreign exchange and play a significant role in supporting household incomes and the country's balance of payments.

A significant portion of Bangladesh's remittance inflows comes from migrant workers employed in the Middle East, with countries including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait among the major sources.

The continued growth in remittances is expected to provide further support to Bangladesh's foreign exchange position and overall external-sector stability.
