Apple has officially entered the foldable smartphone market with the launch of the iPhone Duo, its first-ever foldable iPhone, at its September event.

The iPhone Duo was the major highlight of the event, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, Apple Watch Series 12, Apple Watch Ultra 4 and AirPods 5. Apple also announced new camera, artificial intelligence, health and connectivity features across its device ecosystem.

The iPhone Duo combines a foldable design with Apple's new A20 Pro chip, advanced cameras and iOS 27.

When opened, the iPhone Duo features a 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR display, the largest display ever offered on an iPhone and 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max screen.

When folded, it uses a 5.4-inch outer display, providing 90 percent of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro in a compact, pocket-friendly design.

Both displays share the same aspect ratio and support ProMotion, Always-On functionality and up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness. The inner display also features a nano-texture finish designed to reduce glare and minimize the visibility of the crease.

A hidden FaceTime camera sits beneath the inner display, helping maintain an uninterrupted screen experience.

Apple has focused heavily on durability, constructing the iPhone Duo from grade 5 titanium and giving it an IP68 rating for water, splash and dust resistance.

The device features a precision hinge made with more than 100 components, designed to provide smooth opening and closing while supporting the display when fully opened. Ceramic Shield protects the back, while Ceramic Shield 2 on the outer display provides three times better scratch resistance than the previous generation.

The folding display also uses multiple protective layers, including a scratch-resistant coating and high-strength glass.

The iPhone Duo is powered by the A20 Pro chip and features a custom vapor chamber for thermal management and a dual-battery architecture aimed at delivering all-day battery life.

Its advanced camera system takes advantage of the foldable design, allowing users to capture images and videos from new angles. Camera Control provides quick access to the camera, while a new Siri Camera mode allows Siri to interpret what the camera sees and respond to questions or take actions.

The device also integrates Apple Intelligence and Siri AI, using personal context to provide more powerful AI capabilities.

Apple has optimized iOS 27 for the foldable form factor, while Apple Pencil support through USB-C is planned for later this year. Touch ID is integrated into the side button for authentication.

Apple also introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, featuring major camera upgrades including variable aperture technology and new Pro controls.

The Dynamic Island has also been redesigned to track up to three activities simultaneously. Apple introduced a new Reference Photo feature aimed at helping photographers establish whether an image represents what was actually captured.

The new iPhone lineup is priced $100 higher, with the iPhone 18 Pro starting at $1,199.

Apple refreshed its smartwatch lineup with the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4. The Ultra 4 adds capabilities including Siri AI, expanded live-recording features, and new Audio Intelligence functions.

The company also introduced AirPods 5, featuring improved noise cancellation and an enhanced listening experience.

Apple additionally unveiled a redesigned Health app with new features for managing and understanding personal health information.

Another notable feature is iPhone Handoff, which allows users to use a single phone number across two iPhones and makes switching between devices more seamless.

The iPhone Duo will be available in Star White and Night Sky finishes. Pre-orders begin October 16, with availability starting October 23.

With its foldable design, 7.6-inch inner display, A20 Pro chip, advanced cameras, and Apple Intelligence, the iPhone Duo represents Apple's most significant iPhone design change since the original iPhone.
